The Differences Between Adult Education and High School

posted on March 30, 2022

MCAL Class of 2021

Adult Education can be an excellent alternative to the traditional high school route, whether you left high school months ago or many years ago! A traditional high school classroom environment may not always be a good fit for a student’s learning style. Here are some of the main differences between high school classes and adult education.

The class format and size
In a traditional high school classroom, there could be 20 or 30 students in the same classroom all learning the same thing. Here at MCAL, the class size is much smaller and the class is much more individualized. Usually, the instructor will work one-on-one with each student, meaning that one student could be working on Social Studies, while another is focusing on algebra, and another is practicing writing an essay.

The class time
If you learn better in the afternoon or evening, or if your work schedule conflicts with daytime classes, then Adult Education may be a good fit for you! Our academic classes start at 4:00 pm, and run until 9:00 pm. Pick a day and time that works for you.

The timeline
The path to graduation is different for everyone and we want to make sure that you leave our program feeling confident in your skills. Some of our students work through our program and pass all five of their HiSET tests within a few months, whereas for others, it may take a bit longer to graduate. We work with you at your pace and level so that you are confident and able to pass your HiSET tests.

If you are interested in learning more about Adult Education and to see if our program would be a good fit for you, please call our office to schedule an appointment with our Student Advisor: 207-247-2022.
